When you think of Electric Guitars: odds are that the shape in your head is a Gibson. Since Orville Gibson founded the company in 1902, every single instrument bearing the name Gibson on the headstock has been made in the USA. Beginning with building Mandolins in the early 1900s, Gibson has been at the forefront of every change in American musical history. They started to construct larger hollowbodies such as the L-4 and L-7 and flattop acoustic guitars like the J-35 for players in large ensembles who needed to be heard, then onto electric semi-hollow and hollowbody guitars for Jazz musicians such as Charlie Christian. Then, in 1952 – everything changed. That year, musician Les Paul debuted his first signature model and arguably the most important guitar that Gibson has ever made: The Les Paul Standard with a Goldtop finish and two P-90 pickups. The Les Paul in its many incarnations is one of the most exciting electric guitars you can hold in your hands, even to this day.

The Les Paul was developed throughout its early years up until 1960, each year with an improvement or spec change; 1953 and 1954 with a better neck angle and wraparound tailpiece, the introduction of Seth Lover-designed Patent-Applied-For humbuckers in 1957, up to the beautiful sunburst finishes seen on guitars built from 1958-1960. We also can’t forget the classy tuxedo-like looks of the Les Paul Custom with its ebony fretboard, mother of pearl inlays, and gold hardware! The Les Paul comes in many different variations today that The Music Zoo has in stock; including the modest and gig-friendly Les Paul Studio, the contemporary Les Paul High Performance with its heelless neck and many pickup combinations, and if you want to keep it classic: the Les Paul Traditional with its solid mahogany body and flame maple top just as it looked in 1959. For the player that wants the top of the line guita with the most historically accurate looks and features, there are the Gibson Custom Shop Historic Reissue Les Pauls.

Gibson of course has many other excellent models; the futuristic Flying V and Explorer guitars, the double-horned SG, semi-hollow airiness of the ES-335 and its fully hollow cousin, the ES-330. Gibson also has many acoustic offerings such as the versatile J-45 and ornate Hummingbird. If you want a guitar for any style of music be it Rock and Roll, Blues, Jazz, Heavy Metal…there’s a Gibson of every kind at The Music Zoo for you!
